What is artificial intelligence? Also known as AI, Artificial Intelligence is the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages. It’s a man-made machine with humanlike abilities. This would include the ability to learn almost everything. The capability to reason, to use language, to formulate original ideas and to even show feelings. Roboticists, or people that study robots, are nowhere near reaching this level of artificial intelligence. Today’s AI machines can replicate some specific elements of intellectual ability. So what have we made with Artificial Intelligence so far? There is an amazing amount of things that Artificial intelligence can do, like everyday human things. It can recognize objects in images, translate between languages, recognize emotions, and even navigate a map of the London Underground. But there’s a lot more to it than just doing everyday human things, it can also spot cancer in the human body, detect malware, and discover new uses for existing medicines.

Some scientists say that we should be afraid of AI for three main reasons. First, it can put more and more people out of jobs. Since AI is made to be smarter than humans, the ones that are programmed to do human jobs will do those jobs more efficiently and cheaper than people can. This could put a lot of people out of work. This is currently happening in our automobile industry.  Second, it could cause a catastrophe on the battlefield. Can we trust AI with weapons, or to make a life or death decision on the battlefield? Will it have the best interest of humankind? Just because a problem can be solved with war, doesn’t mean it should be. Third, can we trust it with our privacy and data security. The entire Artificial Intelligence ecosystem is built on how much data it can get. AI will put a lot of power in the hands of only a few people. Someone could hack into the robot and get all the information they want about people . One thing that really concerns some people is that Artificial Intelligence can take away our choices. For example,  if we used AI in the kitchen, will it cook what we want or will cook something completely different?

On the other side of things, a lot of people are in favor of Artificial Intelligence. AI can help us find cures for cancer and AIDS and many more diseases. It can also help teach, aid in communication, and help research. Computers don’t make mistakes. They also do not get bored, so they will always keep working. AI machines can do dangerous work in place of humans. You can send a computer out into space or on a dangerous deep sea diving expedition without putting people into treacherous situations.

Prediction for the State of AI Robotics, as our generation graduates college, AI will be integrated into nearly every aspect of daily life. From manufacturing, to regular household chores, fundamentals of life can and will be automated. We are already seeing this in driverless cars, pilotless helicopters and airplanes, even our eating habits and choices will be altered. So where will this leave Generation Y? Only history will tell. Meanwhile, is America going to just sit and dumb down, or are they going to embrace Artificial Intelligence and use it to their advantage? The choice is yours!
