In today’s society, people are constantly coming up with new ways to get in shape. Whether it’s new workouts or new technology, gym goers jump all over it.

Boxing has been quite popular lately because it is a great way to release stress while getting fit at the same time. Also, many gyms all over the world offer boxing for both men and women. Not to mention boxing can easily be done at home. These days people are very stressed but many people don’t have any time or place to release that stress. Boxing combines workouts and stress relief. “Correctly thrown punches use your legs, hips, glutes, core, obliques, back, shoulders, chest, and arms.” While it may take longer to lose weight, after some time and work you will see results.

Sometimes it can be very difficult to squeeze in a workout to your busy schedule but problem solved… stream workouts on your phone, TV, computer, etc; Streaming workouts allows people on the go to squeeze some fitness into their day. They can do these workouts whenever and wherever. Basically, it is the convenience that makes this fitness craze so popular.  

Another recent fitness craze is HIIT (high-intensity interval training). The idea of HIIT is to have shorter but more intense workouts. When participating in HIIT you experience quick intense burst and then short recovery periods. As a result, you will burn fat more quickly and you will get your heart rate up. Many people who do HIIT often use the phrase “go hard or go home”

While group training classes isn’t an entirely new fitness craze it is becoming more popular. Many people feel more motivated when working out with others that are willing to push them to work harder. Studies show that when people workout in groups not only does your stress level decrease but your physical health increases more than when exercising alone. According to a study done by the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, the reason group exercising is better for you is because of the encouragement aspect. Some people only feel motivated when working out with friends but for others, even a random stranger can be the missing piece to their success.

Personal trainers have been available for a while but many people have doubts about whether or not they should hire a personal trainer. There are many benefits to hiring a personal trainer such as… faster results, personalized workout plans, nutrition plans, and just the simple fact that they know what they’re doing. However, there are some cons too like the price, you may not have time, or they might not be as knowledgeable as you think they are.

Fitness trackers are back and better than ever. Many people are determined to achieve their daily step goal using popular fitness trackers from brands like Fitbit, Garmin, Xiaomi, Moov Now, and many more companies. According to a survey, the best fitness tracker of 2019 is Fitbit charge 3. Although the Fitbit charge 3 was voted best overall, the Garmin Vivosport was voted the best fitness tracker for runners and the Moov Now fitness tracker was voted best waterproof tracker.

After an intense workout, some people are eager to get back to the gym but others are very sore or tired. Another fitness trend isn’t actually fitness. In fact, it is more about focusing on recovery. Finally, people got smart and realized they need to focus more on the wellbeing of their body and not push themselves over the edge. Believe it or not, cryotherapy is not a new invention. Cryotherapy was created in Japan in 1978. Cryotherapy is when part or all of your body is exposed to cold temperatures. The cold temperatures soothe your muscles and help with muscle pain in general. The prefix cryo- means cold so cryotherapy is basically just cold therapy.

Many pro and national teams have made videos of their workouts for people to try at home although some do teams do not. Some individual athletes posted their own workouts as well. To find these workouts just search up your favorite team and type workout after the team name. Watching these team workouts are a great way to be like the athletes that you might look up to.

Major businesses or companies now offer gyms inside some of their headquarters or even just some of their bigger offices. Companies started to worry about the wellbeing of their employees. Many people often use the excuse “I don’t have time” so some employers decided why don’t we pay our employees to exercise. Some companies have onsite gyms and scheduled workout times for their employees. Some of the companies include Nike, Verizon, Facebook, Chick-fil-a, Exxon Mobil, Apple, and many more. The fitness centers are normally located at the headquarters or other important buildings. The main purpose of on-site gyms is for employees to focus on their wellbeing and mental health.

Cycling is another great way to get in shape. Many gyms all across America offer some form of cycling class or option. One popular cycling gym is Soulcycle. Soulcycle has been around since 2006 but has recently gone viral. There are 88 locations in the U.S and Canada however, the closest one to Salem is in Washington DC and would take about four hours to get there. According to, “Cycling mainly uses the legs but also incorporates upper-body muscles such as the chest, back, biceps, triceps, and shoulders for stabilization and performing maneuvers.” You can also purchase your own bike and cycle at home.

The final fitness craze is the Bowflex Treadclimber. The Bowflex Treadclimber combines a treadmill, a stepper, and an elliptical into one machine. Bowflex Treadclimbers range from $999 to $3,299. When using a Bowflex Treadclimber you will burn more calories than when you use a traditional treadmill. However, you can’t run or jog on a Bowflex Treadclimber. Overall, the Bowflex Treadclimber does have some cons but it has many positives too.

You can try many of these fitness crazes at home or in the gym. So next time you are at the gym I challenge you to try one of these new workout ideas.
