The Impact of Social Media and Technology on Teens

Many people believe social media and technology in today’s world is completely over used.  However social media has its perks and positive features if used it the correct way. One way the use of technology by students could be changed is by lessening the use of it in schools. Another way technology could be used better is by being aware of the usage time and health concerns. Finally social media and technology could be modified to be a more positive thing for teens. Social media and technology have a large impact on our world.

One way the use of technology by students could be changed is by lessening the use of it in schools. A majority of middle school and highschool students today have their eyes focused on computer screens in school for at least 2 hours out of their school day, not including homework or phone time. Teens are not going to give up their screen time at home, so the use of computers and tablets in schools should be brought down. Instead of staring at screens all day, we should try new, more interactive ways of learning. What many teachers don’t know is that many kids don’t like using technology all day at school. For example Zachary Bocock, a sixth grade student here at ALMS, believes that technology is overused in school. Zachary does not enjoy working on chromebooks all day. Likewise, seventh grade student Tresjour Peters also finds the use of technology boring in school. Lessening the use of technology in schools could also promote better habits for the future. Therefore, students would learn more life lessons and interactive skills. The majority of students would prefer doing more hands on activities and being active instead of their eyes staying glued to screens.

Another way social media could be used more positively is by taking precautions to safety and time usage. An average teenager today spends seven hours and twenty-two minutes on their phone each day, not including schoolwork. Many scientists discovered that the amount of blue light that our eyes receive each day is not a healthy amount. Blue light also is proven to make it harder to fall asleep, which is why it is important to stay off technology before you go to sleep. Many tools have been produced to help lessen the strain put on your eyes by blue light, like anti-blue light glasses and “night mode” on many phones. These tools are a good way to protect your eyes from the harmful blue light. The usage time of phones is also preventing teens from getting the proper amount of sleep each night. Scientists have proven that you should not be on any technology at least thirty minutes before going to sleep. For example, seventh grader Trejour Peters, gets off her phone at 9:30 each night so that she has time to relax before going to sleep. This is a good habit to create now and for the future. Limiting the use of being on screens is important for our health in the future.

Finally social media and technology are not always a bad thing if used in the correct ways. In today’s world about 37% of teens have been bullied online through social media. Some kids who have been cyber bullied have even led to harm others or themselves. There are many more teens in today’s world that are depressed, which doctors point back to the use of social media. This number is only continuing to grow. Many anti-cyber bullying campaigns have arisen throughout the past few years, which are a great way to spread the word about this issue. Instead of spreading negativity and hatred on the internet, these organizations promote positivity and regulate the amount of hate being posted on social media. Social media should be used to spread positivity.

Social media doesn’t always have to be considered a bad thing. One way the use of technology by students could be changed is by lessening the use of it in schools. Another way technology could be used better is by being more aware of the safety concerns and usage amount. Finally social media and technology could be modified to be a more positive thing for teens. Many people believe social media and technology in today’s world is completely over used. However social media has its perks and positive features if used it the correct way.
