In the past 10 years, streaming websites such as Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and Amazon Prime have been rapidly gaining popularity. The main use of these websites varies from binge watching old television shows, to watching movies as soon as they come out on DVD.  Netflix even has the option, with most of their shows/movies, to download them and watch offline. Today, many people have stopped paying for cable completely, and rely solely on these websites for their entertainment.

With technology expanding quickly, things around the world are changing. Children and young adults are living a completely different life than the lives of their parents 20-30 years ago. The younger generation has grown up using these alternate viewing sources. Traditional TV viewing by 18-24-year-olds has now fallen by 43.6% since 2012. Youtube has a whopping 186 million users! Netflix is close behind with about 110 million subscribers. Next is Amazon Prime with 85 million people in their following. Lastly, 32 million individuals are subscribed to Hulu. In all, 221.8 million people will watch digital video content across devices.

These new sources of entertainment are updating everyday. One example of this is that YouTube has recently come out with YouTube TV. YouTube TV is basically an alternate version of normal television. It offers almost all of the major networks for a cost of $35 per month. Recording shows to the Cloud DVR is also an option. Any show recorded will be saved for up to nine months. Netflix also has been successful with their option to download shows and movies. It costs no extra money and is great for things like road trips. The year 2018 is sure to be full of new technological advancements.

Smart TV’s and Chromecast are another large factor of why people are ditching cable. These devices allow you to stream videos from your phone, tablet, laptop, and any other electronic device, to your television screen. Therefore, sitting down and watching something on the TV is still an option. Chromecast only costs $35, which for a lot of people is a great deal. TV lovers everywhere are taking advantage of the new options available to them.

An eighth grade student here at ALMS, Lauren Reedy, has not been using cable for five years now. She is subscribed to Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. When asked, “What are the advantages?” she responded with, “I don’t have to watch commercials, and I don’t have to record anything.” Lauren loves the fact that she can watch new TV shows with Hulu and Amazon. She even quoted, “I hate cable TV.” There was a brief point when her mom decided to go back to cable and Lauren could not stand it. You never realize the effect commercials have on you until you lose them and have to watch them again.

Who knows what technology will be available 10 years from now? Today we have so many options. and a decade from now will surely give us even more.  Looking back at the way people were entertained only ten years ago proves how considerably life has and will change.
