Quidditch

                    QUIDDITCH

Quidditch. To people who read the Harry Potter series, this is a pretty common sport in the wizarding world. Quidditch is played on broomsticks with 7 players on each side. The players fly on broomsticks in the wizarding world but in real life, they play while holding “broomsticks’ ‘ between their legs. So here are the basics. Like I said above there are 7 players on each side. The first player is the chaser. There are 3 chasers per team. They use the ball called the quaffle. The quaffle is used to score points by throwing it through one of the 3  hoops at the end of the field. You get 10 points for each time you throw it through one of the hoops. There is one keeper per team and their goal is to block the other team from getting the quaffle through their hoop. The best group of players are the beaters. There are two beaters per team and they play with the ball called the bludger. Their job is to throw the bludger at opposing players and disrupt the flow of the game. Finally, there is the seeker. Their job is to look for a golden ball called the snitch. It flies onto the field late in the game and two seekers chase it down. The seeker who gets the snitch gets his/her team 150 points though this varies from school to school. People love the game in the wizarding world and it is quickly rising in popularity in the US and abroad. The Quidditch World Cup is held every 2 years. It started in 2012 and has had a total of 29 teams compete in it over the years. The United States has taken home the world cup championship every year except for 2016. The World Cup has been held in 4 different countries on two continents. The locations for the previous world cups were, Oxford, Great Britain in 2012, in 2014the cup was held in Burnaby, Canada, in 2016 the cup was held in Frankfurt, Germany, and finally, in 2018 the cup was held in Florence, Italy. It was planned for the 5th World Cup to be held in Richmond, Virginia in 2020 but it has since been pushed back to 2022 where it will still be held in Richmond in June and July. Now here are some fun facts about the Quidditch World Cup.

Out of the 29 Countries that have participated over the years only 7 have gone home with a medal. Those countries are.

  • United States
  • Australia
  • Belgium
  • France
  • Canada
  • Turkey
  • United Kingdom

In the first Quidditch World Cup, only Five Countries Participated in those countries.

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • France
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

In all of the Quidditch World cups, the USA has never finished in a position lower than Second Place.

Wondering who the teams with the most appearances are in the championship game and third-place game. Then look no further than the United States and Canada. The USA has appeared in every championship game while Canada has appeared in all but one of the Third Place Games.

Though counties from 5 continents have competed in the cup, only two continents have ever hosted the cup. Those two are Europe and North America and one continent, Africa, has never sent a team.

Thank you for reading and maybe if we gather enough support we could start our own Quidditch Club and maybe we could have a future Quidditch World Cup Champion among us. For now, it’s been Dylan Hancock for the Lewis Growl, have a great day!
