Chloe Underwood, Poet

At Andrew Lewis Middle School there are many students who are talented. Some enjoy art, writing, technology, sports, cooking, etc. A sixth grader named Chole Underwood enjoys writing poetry. One thing she talks about is who inspired her. Another thing is what she loves to write about and why. The last thing is when she found her talent and learned about it. This is Chole Underwood.

One thing Chole talks about is who inspired her. When people start to notice they like something they always are inspired by someone whether it’s someone who is living or if they  have died. Chole is different, she says “I’m not sure who inspired me.” When she started reading poetry and found out about it she was okay at it. Then, she kept writing and got a lot better at it. She says “I suppose most of the books that Dr.Seuss wrote because they’re fun and teach a lesson.” When she reads poetry each book inspires her to keep writing and making inspiring poetry.

Another question I asked Chole was what she loves to write about and why. She says “I like writing about everything.” All she wants is people to be interested in what she writes so she likes to write about fun things, nature, experience, etc. Chole likes to write about anything because she  likes to have a variety of poems. Chole says “When I write, I do like to have the lines rhyme.” This is what Chole Underwood likes to write about.

The last thing I asked was when did she find her talent and when did she learn about it. She says, “ Last year in 5th grade is when I knew that I loved to write poems.” Chole also said, “I started writing them, and I really liked it.” In 6th grade they do a project called poetry and they read many poetry books. Chole then started to love them because of all the poems she has read. She says, “I really like to write history and funny things as well.” This is how Chole Underwood figured out she loved to write poems.

This is one of the poems

It was the darkest night of all summer nights,

Harriet Tubman escaping, fireflies in flight,

Afraid of every sound,

Nothing more could make her heart pound,

Praying to God that they would not find her,

Her insides twisted and turned inside her,

But then she remembered how much she was needed,

And then, she turned; brave now, and fleeted.
