The Origins of Homework

Everyone knows a child’s least favorite thing about school that teachers give them almost everyday. Homework. Homework has been around for a very long time. It’s been around for over one hundred years now. In 1905, Venice, Italy, A man by the name of Roberto Nevelis decided he should make something that would be dreaded by all. He decided it was a fantastic idea to give kids work to do in their home instead of school and bring it in the next day. Other teachers became aware of this and thought it was an amazing concept and they began to give their students homework. This continued from then on and is still a thing today. Since people have definitely advanced from then to now homework has gotten more difficult than it was when the guy invented it. Since it became a more difficult task, people started to dislike it. Over time, homework has become an absolute hatred for some people. Majority of people have given up on homework and some just don’t even bother to do it at all. One of the main reasons it’s such a disliked or annoying topic is because it takes away your free time while you’re at your house, giving you less time to do what you’d like, but instead doing the task of doing schoolwork at your own home. Safe to say many people do not like homework. While it may be a good way to practice and learn lessons in the safety of your own home, it’s a very bothersome task. If the man who invented homework were around to see how his idea has affected the world today I’m sure he wouldn’t be that happy about it. He thought people would love this idea but after some time it’s become frowned upon by most children. A child could be smiling and happy then someone tells them they have homework and that smile drops almost instantly. They could look like they just watched a murder but it turns out their math teacher just assigned them 3 pages of math homework. In reality it’s never that hard of a task it’s just the thought of it like it might take really long to do. Usually it can take like 10-15 minutes but later into school homework can take hours. I’ve seen homework bring people to tears because of how much they had. Sitting at the table or wherever in your house and struggling to do homework while your parents are yelling at you is one of the worst experiences ever. Now I know that sounds exaggerated but in the mind of a small child it’s like hell. Homework dates back a very long time and it’s a very important milestone in history for people. It’s left a big impact on the world and history today. But everyone wishes it never happened. The impact isn’t a positive one either. There may be that one kid that says, “Yay!” to homework but usually even they don’t like homework.
